How to setup APRS on FT-2DR

How to setup APRS on FT-2DR

I picked up a 2DR a few months ago and am finally able to sit down and really dive into it.
So I'm trying to set up APRS and I'm going through and following the APRS manual here. I have the B band set to 144.390 and I'm not seeing my station pop up on [aprs.fi](aprs.fi).
Is there something I'm missing or a resource that would better help me?

Alright, switched that over. And the B band is set to 144.390 (as recommended by the manual). Do I need to punch one of my local repeaters into a or b?

Keep B on the APRS frequency, and then use A for whatever you'd normally use. I don't know the specifics of the FT-2DR (I don't own much outside of Kenwood gear) but there may be an option to public the frequency you're tuned to on A via APRS on B so others can see you're actively on the repeater. If so I suggest you turn that on.

Once you setup the APRS call sign and you have a GPS Lock (the satellite icon stops blinking) you can hit [F MW] and then [BCN TX]. You should here the packet being sent out and the orange Tx light come on.

[F MW] -> [S. List] to see a list of stations you've received.

Getting a signal out really required ideal condition. Inside an apartment or building is going to be hard. I can really only get it to work with an external mag mount antenna on my car. Sometime a signal will go through from the apartment window.

I just got the same radio a two weeks ago and have been learning a lot. Any more questions feel free to ask them or PM and i'll try to answer.

  3. I was reading on the aprs.org website. It suggests that for "normal ops" on should use CTCSS 100 while on the 144.39 Simplex channel. I have set tones on most of the repeaters that I frequent. But I can't seem to get it to activate (to the best of my knowledge) on this simplex freq on the B VFO.

I have set up everything as directed in the Yaesu APRS Operation manual. I find an occasional station that I've heard, but like others have reported here, my callsign (N9KJU) has not been seen on the map.

  4. I've got the same model radio and have finally gotten APRS to work. I had Band B in AMS mode, and once I switched to FM mode, the APRS worked. I was trying to change one thing at a time when I stumbled on this, but I will admit, changing the mode was accidental, but it seemed to work. At some point, I will go back to AMS mode and see if that was really it.

The radio was pretty intimidating, but with a little practice, I'm now seeing the similarities to my mobile FTM-400...so it is all now coming together.
