I have a few questions concerning using the FT2DR with the FTM-400DR/Wires-X setup, in the digital mode.
In the Wires-X software I assume the first thing I need to do is change the Settings -> Transceiver > Operation Mode to Digital. I currently have Analog selected. This section of the window (showing the 4 Operation Mode selections) are grayed out and I can't change them. What am I missing here?
Assuming I get the software changed to digital is it correct to assume my next step would be to put the FT400DR and FT2DR both in the DN mode, and press the Dx button on both transceivers to create a digital link between them? Or are there other parameters I need to change first? (I already have my callsign programmed into the FT2DR.)
And reference the Wires-X mode. I have heard some say I should cycle power with the PWR, Dx and GM buttons pressed in order to get into the HRI-200 mode. (Although I can't seem to find this procedure in the manuals.) While others have said this procedure is not necessary to operate in the Wires-X mode. I prefer not to put my FTM-400DR in the HRI-200 mode because it disables the B-side of the 400DR, but would like to know what putting the FT-400DR in the HRI-200 gains me?

Question1:
In order to be to select the digital transceiver options in the WiRES-X software, you have to out your FTM-400DR into "HRI-200" mode. Here's how you do this:
- Turn your FTM-400 off.
- Then, hold down the Dx and Gm buttons (the two red buttons) while holding down the power button to turn the radio on.
- Your radio should now display "HRI-200" in small letters in the middle of the screen.
- To set your radio back to normal use, simply repeat the process. FYI: when the FTM-400 goes from HRI-200 mode to normal mode, it defaults the VFOs to VFO frequencies instead of your memories. To return back to memory modes, simply press the V/M tab on the screen for VFO A and VFO B.
Once your FTM-400 is in HRI-200 mode, your WiRES-X software will allow to select the other three digital modes.
Question 2:
- Regarding setting your FTM-400 into DW mode... your radio will automatically go into DW mode when you select the digital mode within the WiRES-X software transceiver settings. The WiRES-X software will program the radio's frequency, too.
- To take full advantage of the WiRES-X digital content, set your FT-2DR to your WiRES-X frequency. Then hold down the Dx button for a couple seconds. Your FT2 will automatically connect to your FTM-400. Now you can navigate through menus, download other nodes' pictures, read and send text and voice messages, upload your pictures, etc.
Question 3:
If you want to use WiRES-X in digital mode, you have to set your FTM-400 into HRI-200 mode. You can still use it in analog and retain your VFO B for other use, but once you start to play with the digital mode, you'll become hooked! The digital WiRES-X sounds great and has a bit more to offer.
