Anyone
noticed that the battery drains when the FT2 is OFF? I have charged my
radio twice in the CD41 charger, removed it from the charger and the
next day the battery is dead.
I
have stepped through the menu and the only thing I see running in the
background is the clock. GPS was turned on so I turned it off but
wouldn't think it would run when the radio is off.
Any ideas?

My experience over the past two months is the same as Bill's. I am very pleased with the power consumption.Charging the HT with the stock supplied charger allows me to scan the four local Fusion repeaters, 18 hours a day for three FULL days before needing an overnight recharge. If I leave the radio powered off, no significant drain occurs.
That's significantly better than the old FT1D THAT my friends have, whose GPS gobbles power.
I suspect there may be a problem with your non-standard charger/battery combination.
Did a full reset over the last weekend and charged the battery both with the drop in charger and direct with wall wart. There is some improvement in battery drain but it will still die within 24 hours with the radio turned off.
ReplyDeleteNext step is to full reset and leave it at factory settings to see if the drain continues. Just to make sure it wasn’t the battery I ran the same experiment with an 1800 mah FT1 battery. Whatever the problem is, it’s in the radio.
I also have a Yeasu FT2D. One of the things I am very pleased with is the power management aspects of this radio. I did not join this thread until I had a chance to check my radio's battery drain after a few days. I wanted to see if my initial power management observation was a mistake after reading your posts. It's now been over a week. I left the radio in my vehicle (simply forgot about it). Yesterday I turned it on and it showed full strength on the battery meter. The radio ran all day in SCAN mode!
ReplyDeleteGoing forward with this thread, I would advise first to reset the radio to factory defaults and fully charge the batteries. You may have a function turned on that consumes the battery quicker. Quickest way to determine that instead of trying to figure out which function is causing the problem is to do a factory reset. If you think it's an issue with the desktop charger, measure the battery after charging. If you still have the problem, bring it back. Because between the radio and however you charge the battery, something is wrong. If it's a turned on feature, an unwanted battery draining function, nothing may be wrong. If you purchased new, return the entire package. If you purchased used, contact the seller.
I am having the same problem right now with my FT2D. Started out great with no issue, battery lasted a long time. About a month in owning the radio this problem started. Sunday, May 1 2016, I placed a fully charge 2200 Mha battery on the radio and took a photo of the screen.
ReplyDeleteHere are the values over the two days:
Sunday 8:58 am - 8.4 volts
Sunday 4:01 pm - 8.1 volts
Monday 5:59 am - 7.7 volts
Monday 3:22 pm - 7.5 volts
The only time this radio was turned on was to take a photo of the charge state, nothing more. And I did a factory reset before doing this test.
Try turning your modem off. I think it is in the aprs settings, no. 4. My radio was losing battery even when off. Turned off the modem and now the battery only seems to go down when I'm using it.
ReplyDeleteAfter further testing, this didn't solve the problem. After I disconnect the charger cable, the radio seems to hold its charge until I turn it on once. After that, it loses its charge. I'm now storing the radio with the battery removed. Very annoying with this radio.
Deletethanks, wow
DeleteI may have to consider also :(
Have you try to turn off the GPS power as this sounds like the same problem at the VX-8G, If the GPS power is on and radio is off it will still drain the battery it is a known bug.
ReplyDeleteYep, I tried that but it didn't work. I have resorted to removing my battery when it isn't in use. Holds the charge perfectly. I'm new to all this, but more than a little surprised at the clunkiness of the software and things like this. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis seems to be a fault with the radio itself, possibly firmware related, and not limited to one-off production faults.
ReplyDeleteI also have the self-discharge issue with the FT-2D, it also only lasts 24 hours when taken off charge and left off. Factory reset does nothing to counter this.
