Comparing the Yaesu System Fusion FT1DR and FT2DR

Comparing the Yaesu System Fusion FT1DR and FT2DR

Yaesu FT1DR system fusion review

FT2DR Dual Band Screen SETUP

Dual Band Screen

A-band and B-band are displayed in a top-down fashion.
• Touching [F MW] displays the function menu screen.
• Touching [TX M] enables the communication mode to befixed on the transmission side.
• Touching [MODE] each time switches the operationmode.

FT2DR Setup BandScope

The band scope screen can be displayed by touching [SCOPE] from the function menu screen.

You can change the number of band scope channels by pressing and holding the DISP key for over one second to enter Set mode, then select [DISPLAY] → [3 BAND SCOPE] to select the desired number of channels

YaesuSystemFusion: New firmware update for FT2DR/DE available

I don't think they fixed anything that folks have been reporting. Here are the issues I reported in August - apparently, none were addressed in the new update. The text in red is the Yaesu rep's response back in August. The blue text are my notes after installing the firmware updates:

This one is very annoying - probably the most annoying of all. Even though APRS is set to mute, the audio of the transmitted status beacon comes through the speaker. It can be controlled with the volume control, but doing so lowers the volume of the Band A frequency. So essentially, if I want to quietly monitor my local repeater, I have to deal with listening to an annoying packet from the FT2DR that I should not have to hear. Others have commented on this as well. This has been confirmed and reported to the engineers for study.
No change. Audio of the transmitted beacon comes through the speaker at the level that the volume control is set to.
A/a (shift key) on the virtual keyboards does not work. If they couldn’t get it working, they should remove it. This has been confirmed and reported to the engineers for study.

No change. A/a shift key still does not function.

The WX Alert feature does not appear to function. The frequency is properly set, but it would not engage during the weekly Wednesday test this week, nor during another alert on Thursday. The weather alert does function, however the weather alert feature needs to be turned on and the radio in scan mode (either VFO or memory scan) to function.

FT2DR Tone Squelch Issues on B side only

I have been having problems with the tone squelch on the B side, only, and wonder if anyone else has seen the problem.

First, we have two YSF repeaters, one on 2M and one on 70cm, so I keep one on each side, both set for auto/auto mode.

I have tone squelch turned on, on both sides, so I won't hear the digital hash, if I'm working strictly FM analog.

The A side works as expected. The B side tone squelch doesn't open when the repeater transmits FM analog. It doesn't matter which band is on which side of the radio, the A side always works, the B side fails to open, except immediately after a reset.

However, if I set the mode to FM, it will work, it only fails in auto mode while receiving FM. If I do a full reset, it appears to work for a couple of times, then fails again. If I reload my backup, it fails immediately. If I reset and only reload memory, it appears to work briefly.

I'm still using the original software load. I thought I'd see if anyone else had seen this problem before I do the update.

[FT2DR] Alignment information

Does anyone have alignment procedure and info for the Yaesu FT2DR, such that the Yaesu mic gain base value can be equalized across modes?

FT2DR soft audio on fm mode
FT2DR booming loud audio in digital

Yaesu agrees that the mic gain on analog and digital are way off from each other, but then says that is normal for that radio.

Thank you for any assistance, google has brought me no results so far.

[FT2DR] No Distance/Compass Display

While using the FT-2DR during a Fusion net last night I did not see any distance or compass data from stations I was receiving.  I believe they were seeing distances from me.

I had a solid GPS lock so I don't believe that was the issue and the repeater I was using was 20 over.  The only thing changed was the new firmware update.

Has anyone run into this?  Am I doing something wrong?

FT-2DR Firmware Update Question

Anybody try to install the USB driver for the DSP update on Windows 10 ?

I keep getting a pop up window that tells me the usb device is not recognized

The com port never shows up and when I try to update the driver manually it just tells me the best driver is already installed.

stuck with the radio needing the DSP update - the main and sub update went well with no issues.

Worked for me so you can just try following the procedure again. Basically what I did is following the manual:
-disconnected the cable from pc
-installed the device driver following steps 1-5 (page 4)
-then performed steps 1-7 (page 15) -> only after putting the radio in DSP Write Mode it shows in the device list
-then performed steps 7-9 (page 5)
-then steps 8-22 (page 18)

I find that 'jumping' through pages a bit confusing as someone can easily miss a step but that's the price for having multiple Windows versions supported in a single document I guess.

Let us know if repeating the procedure solves the issue.

New firmware update for FT2DR DE available

New firmware/DSP update for FT2D is available for download:

Changes (taken from the Japanese page) are:

1. optimization of the backlight and the lighting timer settings
2. maximum display distance with C4FM digital and APRS communication partner station is up to 20,000km
3. optimized C4FM digital recovery under severe weak signal or multi-path reception
4. support C4FM digital narrow mode and the usual:
5. improved and optimized

Version Displayed ::  This is the KEY, if you are in DIG mode the DSP version is the correct.   If you are in FM, the DSP displays 0.00

Yaesu [FT2DR] APRS beaconing

[FT2DR] APRS beaconing

Just joined this group yesterday and I need some assistance with making the FT2DR beacon properly on APRS.  I plan on using this radio to track my progress as I hike in the mountains and send the info to the APRS system if possible.
I've been trying to set the parameters to make this radio send a beacon but so far it doesn't seem to be doing so.  I am receiving APRS messages and such and they display on the screen but I cannot get it to smart beacon or manually beacon for some reason.
I have set my GPS parameters for a fixed station and I've

YAESU FT2DR GPS Log Function

Has anybody tried to use the GPS Log function. If so what mapping program did you use to look at the track log. If you had to convert the file how did you convert it.

YAESU FT2DR Battery drain when FT2 is off?

Anyone noticed that the battery drains when the FT2 is OFF? I have charged my radio twice in the CD41 charger, removed it from the charger and the next day the battery is dead.

I have stepped through the menu and the only thing I see running in the background is the clock. GPS was turned on so I turned it off but wouldn't think it would run when the radio is off.

Any ideas?

Answer :
My experience over the past two months is the same as Bill's.  I am very pleased with the power consumption.

Charging the HT  with the stock supplied charger allows me to scan the four local Fusion repeaters, 18 hours a day for three FULL days before needing an overnight recharge.  If I leave the radio powered off, no significant drain occurs.

That's significantly better than the old FT1D THAT my friends have, whose GPS gobbles power.

I suspect there may be a problem with your non-standard charger/battery combination.
